Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Solihull and are not the council. About us
The meeting focused on the election of the new Mayor of Solihull for the municipal year 2024-25, with Councillor Shaheen Ashraf MBE being elected. The meeting also included prayers and acknowledgments of new council members.
The most significant topic was the election of the new Mayor. Councillor Shaheen Ashraf MBE was nominated by Councillor McLachlan and seconded by Councillor Groom. Both spoke highly of her qualifications, dedication to charity, and her ability to bring people together. Councillor McLachlan highlighted her extensive experience, including her work with the United Nations and her role as head of global advocacy for Islamic Relief. He also mentioned her personal qualities, such as her perseverance and sense of humor. Councillor Groom emphasized her generosity, energy, and determination to make the world a better place. The council voted in favor of her election, making her the first Muslim and first Muslim woman to hold the position in Solihull.
Prayers were led at the beginning of the meeting, focusing on various themes such as gratitude for the new council members and the new Mayor, wisdom and courage for the leaders of Solihull, and a call for reducing the carbon footprint. There were also prayers for global issues, including the development of a global treaty on plastic pollution and the situation in Israel and Palestine.
The meeting also welcomed new council members: Councillor Dawkins, Councillor Green, Councillor Bob Grinsell, Councillor Jones, Councillor Phipps, Councillor Rawls, Councillor Sharma, and Councillor Tomlinson. Apologies were noted from Councillor Adiamo, Councillor Hodgson, Councillor McLachlan, and Councillor Farr.
The meeting concluded with Councillor Shaheen Ashraf MBE making her declaration of acceptance of office, followed by applause from the attendees.
