The South Tyne and Wear Waste Management Partnership Joint Executive Committee met on Friday, 14 June 2024, to discuss updates on various waste management contracts, provide a waste sector news update, and review the meeting schedule for the next municipal year. The committee also expressed their thanks to Councillor Linda Green and Colin Huntington for their contributions as they retire.

Contracts Update

The committee received a detailed report on several contracts, including the Residual Waste Treatment Contract (RWTC). Key points included the 2023/24 service update, revisions to waste incineration, and the 10-year anniversary of the RWTC. The committee noted the extension of the Untreatable Residues Contract until 31 March 2025, which ensures waste processing during periods when the Energy from Waste (EfW) facility or contingency processing facilities are unavailable. Other contracts discussed included the Materials Recovery Facility Contracts, Household Waste and Recycling Centre Contracts, Green Waste Composting Contracts, and the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Contract.

Waste Sector News Update

A presentation was given on the latest developments in the waste sector, followed by a discussion on take-back schemes for electrical items. The committee resolved to note the presentation.

The committee reviewed and noted the meeting schedule for the next municipal year. The schedule can be found in the Agenda frontsheet.

Any Other Business

The committee expressed their gratitude to Councillor Linda Green for her contributions as Chair of the Partnership and to Colin Huntington for his work. Both were wished a happy retirement.
