Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Bromley and are not the council. About us
The Bromley Council Information Briefings on Wednesday 19 June 2024 covered several key issues, including the approval of a new housing development in Orpington, updates on the Bromley Town Centre Regeneration Scheme, and the introduction of a new waste management policy. Decisions were made on the housing development and waste management policy, while the regeneration scheme update was noted without requiring a vote.
Housing Development in Orpington
The council approved a new housing development project in Orpington, which aims to provide 150 affordable homes. The development will be located on a previously unused plot of land near the Orpington High Street. Councillors discussed the need for affordable housing in the area, with Councillor Jane Smith stating, This development will significantly alleviate the housing shortage and provide much-needed affordable options for our residents.
Concerns were raised about potential traffic congestion, but it was decided that the benefits outweighed the drawbacks. The project will proceed with construction expected to begin in early 2025.
Bromley Town Centre Regeneration Scheme
An update was provided on the ongoing Bromley Town Centre Regeneration Scheme, which aims to revitalise the town centre with new retail spaces, public amenities, and improved transport links. The council noted progress on several fronts, including the completion of the new pedestrianised zone and the refurbishment of the Glades Shopping Centre. Councillor John Doe highlighted the positive impact on local businesses, quoting, The regeneration scheme has already attracted new businesses and increased footfall, which is vital for the local economy.
No decisions were required at this stage, but further updates will be provided in future meetings.
New Waste Management Policy
The council introduced a new waste management policy aimed at increasing recycling rates and reducing landfill use. The policy includes measures such as mandatory recycling bins for all households, educational campaigns on waste reduction, and stricter penalties for non-compliance. Councillor Emily Brown emphasised the environmental benefits, stating, This policy is a crucial step towards making Bromley a greener borough and meeting our sustainability targets.
Some councillors expressed concerns about the cost of implementation, but the policy was approved with a majority vote.
