Summary
The Aberdeenshire Council Appointments Committee met on Wednesday 19 June 2024 to discuss key appointments and staffing changes. Decisions were made regarding the appointment of a new Director of Education and Children's Services, as well as the restructuring of the Planning and Environment Service.
Appointment of Director of Education and Children's Services
The committee appointed Dr. Fiona Robertson as the new Director of Education and Children's Services. Dr. Robertson, previously the Head of Education at Midlothian Council, was selected for her extensive experience and innovative approach to educational leadership. Councillors highlighted her successful track record in improving educational outcomes and her commitment to child welfare.
Councillor Paul Convery stated, Dr. Robertson's vision for inclusive education aligns perfectly with our council's goals. Her leadership will be instrumental in driving forward our educational priorities.
Restructuring of the Planning and Environment Service
The committee approved a restructuring plan for the Planning and Environment Service to enhance efficiency and service delivery. The restructuring involves the creation of two new roles: Head of Planning and Head of Environmental Strategy. This decision aims to address the increasing demands on planning services and the need for a focused approach to environmental sustainability.
Councillor Sarah Dickinson argued in favour of the restructuring, noting, By dividing the responsibilities, we can ensure that both planning and environmental strategies receive the dedicated attention they require. This will help us meet our sustainability targets and improve service responsiveness.
Review of Staffing Levels in Social Care
The committee reviewed current staffing levels in the Social Care department, acknowledging the challenges posed by increased demand for services. It was decided that a further detailed assessment would be conducted to identify specific areas needing additional resources. The committee emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards of care and support for vulnerable populations.
Councillor Anne Stirling commented, We must ensure that our social care services are adequately staffed to meet the needs of our community. A thorough assessment will help us allocate resources more effectively.
