The Planning Committee - North of Somerset Council convened on 11 June 2024 to discuss several significant planning applications and updates. Key decisions included the approval of a new housing development in Highbridge and the rejection of a proposed commercial development in Bridgwater.
Housing Development in Highbridge
The committee approved the planning application for a new housing development on land to the south of 11 Isleport Lane, Highbridge. The development, detailed in the committee report, includes 50 residential units, with a mix of affordable housing. Councillors discussed the potential impact on local infrastructure and services, with concerns raised about traffic congestion and school capacity. However, the majority supported the project, citing the need for more housing in the area.
This development will provide much-needed affordable housing and contribute to the local economy, said one councillor.
Commercial Development in Bridgwater
A proposed commercial development in Bridgwater was rejected. The application, referenced in the 52 23 00006 DT report, aimed to build a new retail park. Councillors expressed concerns about the environmental impact and the potential harm to existing local businesses. The decision was unanimous, with councillors agreeing that the development did not align with the council's sustainability goals.
We must prioritise developments that support our environmental commitments and local economy, stated a committee member.
Cricketters Update Report
The committee reviewed an update on the Cricketters development, following its referral on 14 May 2024. The update report addressed previous concerns about site access and environmental impact. The developers have proposed new measures to mitigate these issues, which were positively received by the committee. A final decision will be made in a future meeting.
Appeals and Decisions
The committee also reviewed recent planning appeals and decisions. The report on appeals received between 1 May 2024 and 29 May 2024 was presented, highlighting several key cases. Additionally, the decisions document from the meeting provided a summary of the outcomes of various applications.
Public Guidance Notes
The committee discussed updates to the Public Guidance Notes for planning committees, aiming to improve transparency and public engagement in the planning process. The new guidelines will be implemented in the coming months.
