December 4, 2024 View on council websiteSummary
The Licensing Sub Committee was scheduled to consider an application for a new premises licence to allow the sale of alcohol for consumption off the premises at 103 Coatsworth Road, Gateshead. The application was submitted by Anosia Ganesalingam.
Application for a Premises Licence
The sub-committee was scheduled to consider an application for a new premises licence for 103 Coatsworth Road, Gateshead, NE8 1SQ.
The applicant, Anosia Ganesalingam, applied for permission to sell alcohol from 8:00 to 22:00 every day. The application was advertised at the premises and in the local press.
Representations regarding the application were received from Northumbria Police and 32 members of the public.
Northumbria Police objected to the application on the grounds that it would increase the availability of alcohol in the area and could lead to increased crime and disorder. In their representation, Northumbria Police said:
Whilst Northumbria Police welcome the investment in the area, to grant an application of this nature would increase the availability of alcohol, intensify consumption and is likely to add to alcohol related crime and disorder and ASB already experienced within this area and therefore undermining the Licensing Objective of Prevention of Crime and Disorder.
The sub-committee was asked to consider:
- The license application
- The representations
- Whether or not the application should be granted
In considering the application, the sub-committee was required to have regard to:
- The Statement of Gateshead Council’s Licensing Policy
- The Amended Guidance (December 2023) issued under Section 182 of the Licensing Act 2003 by the Secretary of State.
The sub-committee was able to attach conditions to the licence to promote the licensing objectives. A list of model conditions was provided in the meeting pack.
