The Corporate Overview and Scrutiny committee meeting on Thursday 12 December 2024 was scheduled to consider a report on the council's progress on combatting hate crime and a work programme for 2024/25.
Progress against the Hate Crime Scrutiny Review recommendations.
This report was submitted by the Director of Place, Noreen Akhtar. It included a summary of work done by Bradford Council, the Bradford Hate Crime Alliance, and West Yorkshire Police since the Hate Crime Scrutiny Review was published in March 2021.
The report included a detailed response to the recommendations of the review, breaking down progress made against each recommendation.
The Corporate Overview & Scrutiny Committee undertook an in-depth scrutiny review, into the effectiveness of Bradford Council and its partners in addressing Hate Crime across the Bradford District.
As part of the response to the review the council has:
- Published and circulated materials about hate crime.
- Established a YouTube channel and broadcast radio adverts to raise awareness about hate crime.
- Launched a new reporting app for hate crime.
- Run hate crime awareness training.
- Established a programme of events for hate crime awareness.
- Worked with partners to establish a multi-agency hate crime group.
- Explored funding streams to carry out hate crime work.
Corporate Overview and Scrutiny Committee - Work Programme 2024/25.
Councillor Nazam Azam, the committee chair, was scheduled to present the proposed work programme for the committee for 2024/25.
The Council constitution requires all Overview and Scrutiny Committees to produce a work programme.
The report included a list of scheduled meetings and the agenda items that would be considered at each of them, and a list of unscheduled items that the committee might consider during the year.
Among the scheduled items were:
- Procurement of contracts for domestic abuse and sexual violence services and for West Yorkshire Police.
- A quarterly financial position statement.
- A report on the Ilkley Riverside Public Spaces Protection Order.
- A report on progress implementing the Anti-Poverty Strategy.
- A report on the council's workforce development strategy.
- The draft Hate Crime Strategy.
- Budget proposals.
- The Equality, Inclusion and Diversity Plan.
- West Yorkshire Joint Services.
- The Armed Forces Covenant.
- Private Hire and Hackney Carriage Services.
- The Safer Communities Performance Plan.
- Road Safety
- Gambling.
- Anti-social behaviour.
The unscheduled items were:
- ISG.
- The Social Value and Procurement Policy.
- The Bradford Everyone Strategy.
