The South West Wiltshire Area Board met to discuss a range of community issues, including transport, funding for local initiatives, and updates from community partners such as Wiltshire Police and Community First. Councillors approved funding for highway improvements and community projects, and discussed strategies for supporting vulnerable residents and improving local services.
Local Highways and Footpaths Improvement Group (LHFIG)
The Area Board considered recommendations from the LHFIG, approving funding for several local highway and footpath improvements.
These included:
- £5,250 for pedestrian crossing improvements in South Street, Wilton
- £4,767.37 for 30mph speed limits on the C55 in Stourton
- £337.50 for Unsuitable for HGV signs in Dinton
- £12,890.63 for speed limit amendments on the C12 in Bishopstone and Broad Chalke
- £2,437.50 for a speed limit assessment on the A30 in Donhead St. Mary
- £643.12 for NAL sockets in Chilmark
- £1432.50 for a bend warning sign and verge marker posts in Sutton Mandeville
The board deferred a decision on village gates for Dinton, and also on measures to address safety concerns at a bend in the road in Sedgehill, as no representative from Sedgehill & Semley Parish Council was present.
The board noted updates on various other highways issues, including traffic calming in Hindon, kerb realignment in Fovant, and speed limit assessments in Mere and East Knoyle.
Area Board Funding
The Area Board considered and approved funding for several community initiatives.
- £500 was allocated from the youth budget to the South West Wiltshire Local Youth Network Steering Committee for the South West Wilts Youth Partnership Forum.
- £2,425 was granted to the Sedgehill Village Hall Committee towards the Sedgehill Village Hall Renovation.
- £5,000 was allocated to Hindon Village Hall towards a new roof.
- £910 was granted to the Silver Salisbury group towards compiling, designing, printing, and distributing a directory of older people's activities and groups.
Appointments
The board appointed Councillor Gerry Murray to the Nadder Centre Community Liaison Meeting. They also noted the terms of reference for that group, as well as for the LHFIG1.
Information Items and Updates
Community First
The board noted the Community First briefing, which included information on current vacancies, programme updates, and ways to support their work2. BSW Together
The board noted an update from BSW Together (Integrated Care System), including information on Covid-19 spring booster vaccinations and drop-in sessions for the new Trowbridge Integrated Care Centre3. Wiltshire Age UK
The board noted the Wiltshire Age UK newsletter, which included information on a new partnership with KFR for home clearance, friendship across generations at Padwell Road Day Centre, and the Big Knit tiny hat update4. Wiltshire Council
The board noted information items from Wiltshire Council, including the Wiltshire Council Consultation Portal, the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) and Wiltshire Council Framework, the Wiltshire Community Air Network, and a local sponsorship request for SEND Fest 2025.
Police Updates
The board received written updates from Wiltshire Police, including updates from the Warminster, Salisbury, and Amesbury Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs), as well as updates on road safety and violence against women and girls (VAWG).
Shared Lives
The board received a video presentation about the Shared Lives service, which provides support for vulnerable adults in a family setting. Amy Louise Smith, Service Manager for the Shared Life Scheme, asked members to help raise awareness of the service and recruit more carers.
Demand Led Transport
The board received an update on the Demand Led Transport Service, which will be expanding into the South West Wiltshire area in September.
Alzheimer's Support
The board received a presentation from Stephany Bardzil of Alzheimer's Support on their work.
Community Area Update and Discussion
The board received a report from the Engagement and Partnerships Manager on the strategic and local work they are delivering. Councillors provided an overview of their divisions, and the key challenges and opportunities that they have identified that the Area Board can collectively support.
Wiltshire Community Air Network
The board was informed of the upcoming launch of the Wiltshire Community Air Network, a citizen science project to monitor air quality using low-cost sensors. The project aims to gather data on PM2.55 levels across Wiltshire.
SEND Fest 2025
The board was asked to help identify and connect with local businesses or organisations who may be interested in sponsoring SEND Fest 2025, an inclusive festival for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
