June 12, 2024 View on council websiteSummary
The Anti-Poverty and Inequality Committee of Aberdeen City Council met on 12 June 2024 to discuss several key issues, including updates to the Fairer Aberdeen Fund Action Plan, the Local Outcome Improvement Plan, and the introduction of new locality plans. Decisions were made to adopt the updated action plans and locality plans, with a focus on addressing poverty and inequality in the city.
Fairer Aberdeen Fund Action Plan Update
The committee reviewed the Fairer Aberdeen Fund Action Plan Update, which included significant revisions aimed at enhancing support for vulnerable communities. The updated plan was adopted unanimously. Key points of discussion included the need for targeted interventions in areas with high levels of deprivation and the importance of community involvement in the planning process. One councillor noted,
Community engagement is crucial for the success of these initiatives. We must ensure that those affected by poverty have a voice in shaping the solutions.
Local Outcome Improvement Plan (LOIP)
The committee also discussed the Refreshed Local Outcome Improvement Plan (LOIP), which outlines strategic priorities for improving outcomes for residents. The refreshed LOIP was approved, with particular emphasis on reducing child poverty and improving access to education and employment opportunities. The committee highlighted the importance of collaboration with local organisations and stakeholders to achieve these goals.
New Locality Plans
Three new locality plans were introduced and approved: the North Locality Plan, the Central Locality Plan, and the South Locality Plan. These plans are designed to address specific needs and challenges within different areas of Aberdeen. The plans include measures to improve housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities. A councillor remarked,
These locality plans are tailored to the unique needs of each area, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and that we can make a real difference in people's lives.
Accessing Money Advice Services
The committee reviewed the Accessing Money Advice Services report, which highlighted the importance of providing accessible financial advice to residents. The report was accepted, and the committee agreed to increase funding for money advice services to help residents manage debt and improve financial literacy.
Supporting People with the Cost of Living
The Supporting People with the Cost of Living report was also discussed. The committee acknowledged the ongoing cost of living crisis and approved measures to provide additional support to low-income households. This includes increasing access to affordable housing and expanding food assistance programmes.
Citizen Assemblies
Finally, the committee considered the Citizen Assemblies report, which proposed the establishment of citizen assemblies to engage residents in decision-making processes. The proposal was approved, with the aim of fostering greater community involvement and ensuring that council policies reflect the needs and priorities of Aberdeen's residents.
