The Licensing Panel D of Camden Council met on Thursday, 22 January 2026, to consider an application to renew a Sex Establishment Licence for The Griffin. The meeting's agenda also included standard procedural items.
The Griffin: 125 Clerkenwell Road, EC1R 5DB
The primary item scheduled for discussion was an application to renew the Sex Establishment Licence for The Griffin, located at 125 Clerkenwell Road, London EC1R 5DB. This application was made by Wayne Edward Chandler under Schedule 3 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982.
The report indicated that the applicant was seeking to continue operating as a Sexual Entertainment Venue (SEV) with the same hours as the existing licence: Monday to Thursday from 11:00 to 00:00, Friday to Saturday from 11:00 to 01:00, and Sunday from 11:00 to 00:00. No variations to the permitted hours, standard conditions, or additional conditions were requested.
The documents provided detailed the applicant's proposed operating procedures, including a Dancer's Welfare Policy, a Disciplinary Procedure, a Code of Conduct for Dancers, and a Code of Conduct for Customers. These documents outlined expectations for staff behaviour, customer conduct, and the management of the premises to ensure compliance with licensing objectives.
Consultation with various bodies, including the Metropolitan Police Service, Trading Standards, Environmental Health, and Health and Safety departments, had taken place. No objections were received from these statutory consultees or from local councillors and members of the public.
The report also referenced Camden's Sex Establishment Policy, which includes a presumption to refuse applications for new sex establishments in the borough, though this presumption does not apply to renewals. The policy outlines considerations for the suitability of the applicant, the premises, and the locality, including proximity to sensitive premises. A site location map was provided to assist the panel in assessing the locality.
The report noted that the premises had been inspected by licensing officers on 18 November 2025, during operational hours, and were found to be compliant with all relevant standards, amended, and additional conditions. No complaints or reports of breach of conditions had been received in relation to The Griffin during the preceding 12 months.
The panel was asked to determine the application to renew the licence, considering the applicant's suitability, the character of the locality, and the layout and condition of the premises. The panel had the option to grant the application with standard conditions, grant it with revised or additional conditions, or refuse the application.
The meeting also included standard procedural items such as apologies, declarations of interest, and announcements.
