Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Sutton and are not the council. About us
The Hackbridge, St Helier and The Wrythe Local Committee met on 22 January 2026 to discuss a range of community matters. Key discussions included updates on Family Hubs, a review of the committee's activities in the 2025/26 financial year, and a community showcase featuring local organisations. Public questions also highlighted concerns regarding anti-social behaviour and the timely resolution of highway issues.
Community Showcase
The meeting featured presentations from two local organisations. The Brave Hearts Academy, described as one of the UK's premier wrestling academies,
showcased its work with members aged from 7 to adults, focusing on discipline, strength, and resilience. The Academy is currently seeking a permanent location. The Carshalton Little League, established in 1974, presented its role in providing affordable football for children aged 6-16, supporting approximately 500 children weekly. The league, based at the St Helier Open Space, also highlighted its positive impact on participants' mental health, social development, and physical well-being.
Family Hubs
A representative from Family Hubs provided an overview of the services offered to families from pre-birth up to the age of 19, extending to 25 for young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Family Hubs aim to support families, particularly during the crucial first 1,001 days of a child's life, by helping them access local services and support networks. There are four Family Hubs across the Sutton borough: Cheam and South Sutton, Wallington, Central Sutton, and Carshalton. The majority of services are universal and accessible via self-referral, with many programmes delivered by trained volunteer parents. Services are offered at various times, including evenings and online, to accommodate different schedules. Information on parenting support courses and general Family Hub services is available online.
Hackbridge, St Helier & The Wrythe Local Committee - Looking Back 25/26
The Community Engagement Manager presented a review of the Local Committee's activities during the 2025/26 financial year. The committee had supported various local organisations through presentations, helping to raise their profiles and connect them with residents. A total of £6,500 was allocated for Local Funding, supporting a range of local groups. Additionally, £46,032.78 of Public Realm Funding was committed to improvements across the Local Committee area.
Public Questions
Several public questions were raised during the meeting. Abdul Saboor Khan, representing a local business, raised concerns about anti-social behaviour in the Rosehill area. Council officers agreed to investigate this matter further outside of the meeting. Andrew Behan, a local resident, raised two questions regarding highway issues. He expressed concern about the prolonged time taken to address an unilluminated warning sign in Wrythe Lane, which was scheduled for completion by March 2026, and about other outstanding sign-related issues. Councillors acknowledged that the delays were not acceptable and agreed to follow up on these concerns. Residents were reminded to report highway issues via the council's website. Carl Carson, another local resident, had submitted a question about inconsiderate parking, but did not attend the meeting.
