The Appointments & Disciplinary Committee of Croydon Council met on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, to approve salary packages and undertake the selection and appointment processes for two key director roles: Director of Culture & Community Safety and Director of Streets and Environment. The committee agreed to proceed with the recruitment for both positions, with the details of the candidates to be discussed in a private session.

Appointment of Director of Culture & Community Safety

The committee agreed the salary package for the Director of Culture & Community Safety role, which will be Director Grade 2, with a salary range of £118,680 to £123,390. This figure includes the 3.2% national pay award applicable from 1 April 2025. The committee also resolved to undertake the selection process and agree an appointment for this post, with candidate details to be reviewed in a Part B session. The appointment will be subject to the council's standard notification process.

The role of Director of Culture & Community Safety is a senior management position responsible for a wide range of public-facing services. This includes leading on violence reduction and community safety initiatives, managing the borough's library and leisure services, the Museum of Croydon, and developing the cultural offer for the community. The postholder will also oversee the Coroner's service and the council's resilience and emergency planning arrangements, ensuring compliance with the Civil Contingencies Act 2004. The recruitment process is being managed in partnership with executive search agents Gatenby Sanderson to ensure a rigorous and high-quality selection.

Appointment of Director of Streets and Environment

Similarly, the committee agreed the salary package for the Director of Streets and Environment. This role will be at Director Grade 3, with a salary range of £129,900 to £135,064, reflecting the national pay award of 3.2% effective from 1 April 2025. The committee also resolved to proceed with the selection and appointment for this position, with candidate information to be discussed in a Part B session. Any appointment will be subject to the council's established notification procedures.

This Director of Streets and Environment role oversees five key teams: Environment Services and Sustainable Neighbourhoods; Highways and Traffic; Parking; Environmental Health, Trading Standards and Licensing; and Independent Travel, including SEND and fleet management. The position carries responsibility for numerous public-facing operational services that impact residents, businesses, and visitors. Key areas include waste management and recycling, street cleaning, regulatory services, traffic management, parks and open spaces, and the council's net zero and climate adaptation strategies. The recruitment process for this critical role is also being supported by Gatenby Sanderson.
