The Appointments and Disciplinary Committee met on Wednesday 11 March 2026 to discuss and agree salary packages for two key director-level appointments. The committee agreed to proceed with the selection process for the Director of Culture and Community Safety and the Director of Streets and Environment.
Appointment of Director of Culture and Community Safety
The committee was asked to agree the salary package for the post of Director of Culture and Community Safety. This is a public-facing role responsible for violence reduction, community safety, library and leisure services, and the Museum of Croydon. The role also includes leading on the Coroner's service and the council's resilience and emergency planning arrangements. The proposed salary package for this position is within Director Grade 2, ranging from £118,680 to £123,390 per annum, which includes the 3.2% national pay award applicable from 1 April 2025. The committee agreed to this salary package and to proceed with the selection process for the appointment.
Appointment of Director of Streets and Environment
The committee also considered the appointment of a Director of Streets and Environment. This role oversees a directorate comprising Environment Services and Sustainable Neighbourhoods, Highways and Traffic, Parking, Environmental Health, Trading Standards and Licensing, and Independent Travel, including SEND and fleet management. The proposed salary for this Grade 3 position is between £129,900 and £135,064 per annum, reflecting the 3.2% national pay award effective from 1 April 2025. The committee agreed to this salary package and to proceed with the selection process for the appointment.
Both appointments are considered business-critical, and the council opted for permanent recruitment rather than continued interim arrangements to ensure stability and cost-effectiveness. The recruitment process for both roles is being managed in partnership with executive search and selection agents Gatenby Sanderson. The committee noted that any appointment would be subject to the council's established notification process. The meeting concluded with the exclusion of the press and public for the remainder of the agenda items.
