The Merton Council meeting on 25 February 2026 saw the approval of the Budget and Medium-Term Financial Strategy for 2026-2030, which included a decision to freeze the general Council Tax while increasing the Adult Social Care precept by 2%. The council also elected Councillor Shuile Syeda as Mayor for the 2026/27 municipal year and re-elected Councillor Ross Garrod as Leader of the Council.
Key discussions and decisions included the approval of the council's budget and medium-term financial strategy, the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, and the appointment of the Leader of the Council. The meeting also addressed the constitution of committees, the calendar of meetings for the upcoming year, and the adoption of the Pay Policy Statement and Members' Allowances Scheme for 2026/27. Additionally, the council approved the acquisition of 146 homes at the former Mitcham Gas Works site to provide new council homes at social rent.
