The Health and Well-being Board of Northumberland Council convened for its annual meeting on Thursday, 14 May 2026. The agenda included the adoption of a new Public Mental Health Strategy and discussions on the approach to Neighbourhood Health Plans.
Public Mental Health Strategy
A key item scheduled for discussion was the new Public Mental Health Strategy for 2026-2031. This strategy aims to improve the mental wellbeing of residents across Northumberland by focusing on three core objectives: prevention, early intervention, and building resilient and connected communities. The strategy acknowledges that mental health is influenced by a wide range of social, economic, and environmental factors, and that a collaborative, whole-system approach is necessary. It highlights the importance of addressing inequalities, promoting protective factors such as social connection and financial security, and reducing risks like adversity and discrimination. The strategy also outlines cross-cutting themes, including the effective use of data, ensuring access to information, embracing digital provision, and workforce training. The report recommended that the Health and Wellbeing Board approve the strategy and agree on its objectives and governance.
Neighbourhood Health Plan
The Board was scheduled to receive a presentation on the approach to Neighbourhood Health in Northumberland and the development of a Neighbourhood Health Plan. This initiative is designed to provide accessible and integrated health services closer to people's homes.
Membership and Vice-Chair Election
The meeting began with the Board being asked to note its membership for the ensuing year, which had been agreed by the Council on 6 May 2026. Following this, the election of a Vice-Chair for the Health and Wellbeing Board for the upcoming council year was scheduled.
Forward Plan
The Board was also set to review its forward plan for the 2026-2027 council year, which details forthcoming agenda items for future meetings. This plan includes a range of topics such as the Best Start in Life Plan, the Gambling Strategy, and progress reports on various strategies including Sexual Health and Oral Health.
