The Friary School - Sports Facilities - S106 Update

Decision

The Cabinet Member agreed to the transfer of £96,066 to The Friary School towards the cost of developing the outdoor area adjacent to the Sports Hall into a multi court netball facility for school and community use.

Reasons for the decision

The improvement of the outdoor area adjacent to the Sports Hall will provide much needed community and school provision for Netball courts in the Lichfield district area

Allocation of this money successfully spends a significant amount of money linked to a historic S106 payment from the development of the Spode Avenue, Handsacre site.

Alternative options considered

Due to the closure of Friary Grange Leisure Centre the option of spending the money on the swimming pool and/or upgrade of the sports hall is not seen as a good use of the funding, while supporting the adjacent area to the site with Netball provision supports a clearly identified need for the school and community.

Due to the Developer choosing not to renegotiate the S106 and not signing a deed of variation that would have meant the money being spent on the construction of Stychbrook Leisure Centre, spending the money on a related project to the original stipulation of the S106 on The Friary School facilities is seen as a positive use of the funding.
