Decision

The Leader:

Approved the freehold acquisition of 2 bed house in Lichfield for the sale price of £255,000, with a further £10,000 set aside for associated legal costs and repair/maintenance works

Noted that the council will work with Homes England ongoing to determine whether any external funding is available to contribute to the purchase and delivery of this accommodation unit. Should funding be available, any underspend of capital monies to fund this property will be maintained in the capital budget for further purchases.

Reasons for the decision

The acquisition will increase the council’s supply of suitable temporary accommodation, reduce reliance on expensive nightly-paid accommodation, improve outcomes for vulnerable households, and support the council’s housing and homelessness duties.

The purchase also represents long-term value for money by creating a council-owned asset.

Alternative options considered

Continue using private temporary accommodation (not recommended due to higher ongoing costs and limited availability).
