Purpose

The purpose of this
report is to seek approval to negotiate with ‘FareShare North East’ to put in place
contract arrangements that will provide membership of FareShare North East to community sector
organisations in Newcastle.

The opportunity for
community sector organisations to have a membership with
FareShare
North East, contributes to the
Council’s priority areas around ‘Net Zero’ and
‘Tackling Poverty’. As ‘FareShare North East’ is the largest food
redistribution charity in the North East. They take good-to-eat
surplus food from the food industry and divert it to over 200
charities and community groups, reaching thousands of people each
week. By making good use of a huge amount of food every year, they
save it from being thrown away and help to combat climate
emissions. Each membership provides 100kg of food a week to each
organisation/ venue. Thus, promoting a low-carbon municipal waste
system that gives priority to the upper levels of the waste
hierarchy (reduce, reuse, recycle, recovery, landfill) and reduces
residual waste to landfill.
