Purpose

Section 86 of the Local Government Act 1972 requires that, where a vacancy occurs due to the death of a councillor, the authority has a duty to declare a vacancy as soon as practicable.

Paragraph 1.25 of the officer scheme of delegation authorises the Chief Executive to declare any vacancy in office under Section 86 of the Local Government Act 1972.

Pursuant to this decision being made, a notice of casual vacancy will be published on the Council's website as soon as practicable.

Decision

To declare that a casual vacancy exists in the office of a Borough Councillor in the Hooley, Merstham and Netherne ward of the Borough of Reigate and Banstead, for a term of office ending on 31 March 2027.

Alternative options considered

There are no other options to consider, as the authority has a statutory duty to declare any vacancy in office.
