The
reasons are:
Best value for the council,
whilst taking its first initial step into electric refuse vehicles.
It will also give the council the opportunity to gain first hand
data and information from its operational use to further inform and
develop the business case and commercial viability for future
purchases should this be the council’s approved approach to
fleet decarbonisation in the future.
Options
considered and rejected were:
Alternative electric refuse
vehicles trialled. The preferred eRCV
build identified by the team from the trials is a Mercedes chassis
with a Terberg hydraulic lift and
Dennis Eagle body, provided by Estar
Truck and Van. This vehicle performed best in the trials and was
able to complete all rounds with a return charge of around 40% on
the longest route day. The trial for this vehicle was completed in
the winter months where maximum demand would be drawn from the
battery.
Diesel equivalent refuse
collection vehicle option on the basis that the council is
developing a planned approach to fleet decarbonisation, replacing
fleet vehicles for low carbon alternatives through the fleet
replacement programme. Responding to climate change is a corporate
priority and also aligns with the councils climate emergency
declaration and the Greater Manchester 5yr Environment
Plan.
