The Main works are Monton Canal Bridge Vehicle Restraint System Protection Scheme.

Options considered and rejected were: Not to award the Contract.

Assessment of Risk: Low – Salford City Council Engineering and Landscape Department are well versed in delivering works of this nature.

The risk of not undertaking the works is that a vehicular collision could cause structural damage to the bridge resulting in a bridge closure and significant impact on the Highway Network, with no simple diversion route available to lessen the impact on the passage of vehicles.  Furthermore, the cost for the repair works following vehicle collision are likely to be substantial in comparison to the cost of the vehicular restraint measures proposed.

The source of funding is: the 2025/26 Highways Capital Programme.

Legal Advice obtained: 9th January 2026 – received from Tony Hatton, Principal Solicitor.

Financial Advice obtained: 12th January 2026 – Received from Ian Cowburn, Senior Accountant.
