Full council record
Purpose
The ice rink currently runs on generators which required hiring and fuel purchasing annually. As such, to help reduce running costs, it is proposed that the existing substation be upgraded to increase the electrical capacity in order to directly power the ice rink. There is not enough capacity to do this currently.
Decision
RESOLVED –
- That spend of £65,000 in order to support increasing electrical capacity at Calverley grounds be approved.
- That, working in partnership with the ice rink provider, Icescape, to engage UKPN on our behalf to deliver the upgrade be approved.
- That delegated authority be given to the s151 Officer in consultation with the Cabinet Member for Finance and Property to determine the source of funding be approved.
Reasons for the decision
To approve the upgrade will enable the ice rink (and other park events) to operate using electricity. This will eliminate reliance on generators, reduce environmental impact, improve local amenity, and support the long-term viability of the ice rink in Tunbridge Wells.
Alternative options considered
Do nothing – Rejecting the proposal presents a significant risk to the continuation of the ice rink. Due to sustained increases in fuel costs, operating the event using generators is no longer financially sustainable.
