The Health Committee of the Greater London Authority Council met on Tuesday 16 June 2026. The meeting agenda included noting the committee's work programme and discussing the rapporteurship on the community use of school sports facilities. The committee also noted the report on Healthy High Streets, which served as background for discussions with invited guests.
Healthy High Streets
The committee noted the report on Healthy High Streets, which provided background for discussions with invited guests. The report highlighted that there is no single definition of a 'healthy high street', but research suggests key features include access to healthy food, green spaces, health services, and good transport links, while a high prevalence of takeaways and betting shops are associated with 'unhealthy high streets'. The London Plan 2021 promotes the vitality of town centres through the Healthy Streets Approach and managing the over-concentration of hot food takeaways. The Mayor of London has also launched a £20 million High Street Support Fund to invest in improvements to high streets across the capital. The committee was set to discuss the features of a healthy high street, their impact on health inequalities, actions being taken by various stakeholders, and how the Mayor's new London Plan can empower councils to develop healthier high streets.
Health Committee Work Programme
The committee noted its work programme and meeting dates as agreed by the London Assembly on 11 May 2026. It was noted that authority would be delegated to the Chair, in consultation with party Group Lead Members, to agree any output from the Rapporteurship on the community use of school sports facilities. This investigation aims to explore how the community use of school sports facilities can support exercise and reduce health inequalities for young Londoners. The schedule of meetings for the committee was also noted, with future topics to be determined.
