The Police and Crime Committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday 17 June 2026 to discuss a range of policing and crime-related matters. The agenda includes a question and answer session with the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), as well as a review of the committee's work programme.
Question and Answer Session with the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime
A significant portion of the meeting is dedicated to a question and answer session with MOPAC, represented by Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Kaya Comer-Schwartz, and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), with Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes QPM in attendance. The discussions are expected to cover several key areas:
- Palantir Pilot: The committee is scheduled to examine the governance, safeguards, and independent oversight mechanisms in place for the pilot use of Palantir technology by the MPS. This includes discussions on proportionality, fairness, data security, algorithmic bias, and public confidence. The cost of the pilot and whether Palantir offered a discounted rate are also on the agenda. The committee will also consider the reputational risks associated with contracting with a company that has faced scrutiny over its values.
- Live Facial Recognition (LFR) Technology: The committee will discuss the expanded use of LFR technology across London by the MPS, following a High Court ruling. Questions are expected to focus on the effectiveness of LFR in keeping Londoners safer, its potential use at protests, and the decision-making process for deploying the technology at specific events. The committee will also explore the safeguards in place to ensure fairness and accountability, particularly in light of past misidentifications and the potential for a
two-tier policing
perception. - Recruitment and Retention of Metropolitan Police Officers: The committee's work programme includes a rapporteurship on the recruitment and retention of Metropolitan Police Officers, led by Emma Best AM. The committee is recommended to delegate authority to the Chair to agree any output arising from this investigation.
- Online Fraud and Support for Victims: A letter from the Chair of the Police and Crime Committee to the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime regarding online fraud is scheduled for noting. This letter highlights the increasing complexity of fraud due to AI and technological advancements, the challenges in reporting and victim support, and calls for a public health-style messaging campaign and renewed funding for The Cyber Helpline.
- MPS Technology Contracts and Procurement: The committee is set to discuss the governance and safeguards surrounding the MPS's use of technology, including the Palantir pilot. This will involve examining how MOPAC measures improvements in standards and public trust resulting from new technologies.
Police and Crime Committee Work Programme
The committee will also review its work programme, which outlines planned discussions and investigations. This includes upcoming topics such as Grooming gangs in London
and further question and answer sessions. The committee is recommended to note its work programme and delegate authority to the Chair to agree any output from the rapporteurship on the recruitment and retention of Metropolitan Police Officers.
The meeting will also include standard agenda items such as apologies for absence, declarations of interests, and the confirmation of previous minutes.
