Summary
The Doncaster Council Cabinet meeting on 19 June 2024 focused on several key issues, including the Joint Waste Plan, the South Yorkshire Airport City project, and the council's financial performance. Decisions were made on the Joint Waste Plan and the next steps for the South Yorkshire Airport City project.
Joint Waste Plan
The council discussed the Joint Waste Plan, which aims to improve waste management across Doncaster. The plan includes measures to increase recycling rates and reduce landfill usage. Councillors debated the environmental and economic impacts of the plan. One councillor highlighted the importance of sustainable waste management practices
to meet the council's environmental targets. The plan was approved, with the council committing to implement the proposed measures over the next five years.
South Yorkshire Airport City
The South Yorkshire Airport City project was another major topic. The project aims to develop the area around Doncaster Sheffield Airport into a hub for business and logistics. The council discussed the economic benefits, including job creation and increased investment in the region. However, concerns were raised about the potential environmental impact and the need for robust infrastructure to support the development. The council decided to proceed with the next steps of the project, including further feasibility studies and stakeholder consultations.
Financial Performance
The Q4 Finance Performance Report was presented, showing the council's financial performance for the last quarter. The report highlighted areas where the council had overspent and underspent, and provided an overall positive outlook for the council's financial health. One councillor noted, Prudent financial management has allowed us to maintain essential services while investing in key projects.
The report was accepted without significant amendments.
Equity and Inclusion
The council reviewed the Equity and Inclusion DSG and HN report, which focuses on ensuring equitable access to services for all residents. The report included recommendations for improving inclusion in education and social services. Councillors discussed the importance of addressing disparities in service provision and ensuring that all community members have equal opportunities. The recommendations were approved, with a commitment to monitor progress and report back in future meetings.
St. Leger Homes Performance
The performance of St. Leger Homes, the organisation responsible for managing Doncaster's council housing, was reviewed in the Q4 Cabinet Performance Report. The report highlighted improvements in tenant satisfaction and maintenance response times. However, some councillors expressed concerns about ongoing issues with housing repairs and the need for further improvements. The council acknowledged the progress made and urged St. Leger Homes to continue enhancing their services.
