The Combined Strategic Scrutiny and Customer Focus Scrutiny Committees of Exeter Council met on Tuesday 18 June 2024 to discuss several key issues, including the approval of the Exeter City Centre Vision 2040, the introduction of a new waste management scheme, and updates on the Exeter Homelessness Strategy. Decisions were made on the City Centre Vision and the waste management scheme, while the homelessness strategy update was noted.
Exeter City Centre Vision 2040
The committee approved the Exeter City Centre Vision 2040, a comprehensive plan aimed at transforming the city centre into a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive space. The vision includes proposals for increased pedestrianisation, enhanced green spaces, and the promotion of local businesses. Councillors highlighted the importance of creating a liveable city
that prioritises the needs of residents and visitors alike.
Councillor Sarah Williams emphasised the need for a balanced approach, stating, While we aim to modernise and revitalise the city centre, we must ensure that we preserve its historical character and support our local communities.
New Waste Management Scheme
A new waste management scheme was introduced, focusing on increasing recycling rates and reducing landfill waste. The scheme includes the rollout of additional recycling bins across the city and a public awareness campaign to educate residents on proper waste segregation.
The committee decided to implement the scheme, with Councillor John Smith noting, This initiative is crucial for our environmental goals and aligns with our commitment to sustainability. Educating the public is key to its success.
Exeter Homelessness Strategy Update
The committee received an update on the Exeter Homelessness Strategy, which aims to reduce homelessness through a combination of support services and affordable housing initiatives. The update highlighted the progress made in providing temporary accommodation and the challenges faced in securing long-term housing solutions.
Councillor Emma Davis pointed out, While we have made significant strides in addressing immediate needs, the lack of affordable housing remains a critical issue that requires ongoing attention and resources.
