The General Purposes Committee of Aldermen of City of London Council met on Tuesday 13 October 2026.

Worshipful Company of Educators - Supplemental Charter and Bylaws

The committee considered and approved the draft Supplemental Charter and Bylaws for the Worshipful Company of Educators. This update aims to clarify and modernise the company's original charter. Key changes include an updated clause on the company's objects, which now references the Educators' Trust and broadens its philanthropic activities within education. The revised bylaws also simplify membership categories, clarify disciplinary processes, and reduce the age for admission by patrimony to eighteen. The Magistracy and Livery Sub Committee had previously approved these changes, and the Supplemental Charter requires formal approval at the Court of Alderman later on the same day.

Worshipful Company of Lightmongers - Revised Ordinances

The committee considered and approved revised ordinances for the Worshipful Company of Lightmongers. These updates aim to reflect current practices more accurately and include provisions for Past Masters Emeriti, who continue to receive Court papers without counting towards the Court's membership limit. The revisions also incorporate definitions previously only found in the company's bylaws, reflect changes to its charitable trust, and ensure gender-neutral language. The Magistracy and Livery Sub Committee had also previously recommended these revised ordinances for approval.

Appointments

The committee agreed to the re-appointment of Alderman Christopher Makin to the Emanuel Hospital Management Sub-Committee for a further three-year term, expiring in November 2029. The committee also noted a vacancy for an Alderman on the Community and Children's Services Committee for the remainder of the civic year, following the stepping down of Alderman Kawsar Zaman. Aldermen interested in this position were encouraged to inform the committee.
