The Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth Decisions meeting on Tuesday 28 July 2026 addressed concerns regarding traffic and parking on Grenside Road and a petition for pavement widening on Church Street in Staines. Decisions were made to refresh existing double yellow lines on Grenside Road and investigate the feasibility of additional restrictions, while the proposal to widen the pavement on Church Street was not approved.

Grenside Road Traffic and Parking Concerns

A petition concerning the severe traffic and parking crisis on Grenside Road¹ was discussed. Martin Groves, representing the petitioners, highlighted issues such as vehicles parking on double yellow lines, blocking driveways, and obstructing pavements, forcing pedestrians, including children and those with buggies, into the road. He proposed the installation of planters to create a physical barrier and a greener environment. Councillor Tim Oliver, the Division Councillor, supported the need for improved sightlines and suggested extending double yellow lines on a specific bend. Ricky Hill, in attendance, confirmed that the extension of double yellow lines on the bends could be looked into.

Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth, Councillor Matt Furniss, stated that while the council would refresh existing double yellow lines on Grenside Road and investigate additional restrictions, the proposal for planters would be taken a bit offline to assess feasibility. He also noted that the council awaits new government powers to enforce footway parking, which would help address the issue of pavements being completely blocked. The decision was to extend the double yellow lines and take the planter suggestion offline for further consideration.

Church Street, Staines Pavement Widening

A petition requesting the widening of the pavement at the junction of Church Street and Vicarage Road in Staines² was also considered. The petition, which received 157 signatures, highlighted that the pavement at its narrowest point is less than 70cm, posing a safety risk for disabled and elderly users, as well as those with pushchairs and wheelchairs. It was also suggested that widening the pavement and narrowing the road could help reduce traffic speeds, as the 20mph speed limit was reportedly not always observed.

Councillor Furniss explained that a detailed feasibility study would be required to widen the pavement, which could necessitate making the road one-way, potentially leading to increased speeds and significant diversions. Survey results from June 2026 indicated that traffic speeds at the junction were compliant with the 20mph limit, with average mean speeds of 15.02 mph eastbound and 15.99 mph westbound. He also noted that the pavement on the north side of Church Street is significantly wider and could be used as an alternative. Consequently, the council has no plans to widen the southern pavement of Church Street outside The Bells Public House. The concerns raised were noted, but no decision was made to proceed with the pavement widening.
