The Scottish Borders Licensing Board met on Friday, 23 October 2026. The board granted a premises licence to John Darling for The Slytric Collection, allowing him to sell luxury malt whisky as part of his online gift box business. The passing of Councillor John PatonDay was mentioned, and condolences were offered.
Grant of Premises Licence for The Slytric Collection
The board granted a premises licence to John Darling, trading as The Slytric Collection, for his business at 9 Langlands Road, Hawick1. Mr Darling's business involves preparing and dispatching luxury gift boxes containing assorted goods, primarily from the Scottish Borders, including crafts. The licence will permit the inclusion of bottles of luxury malt whisky as part of this offering. Sales will be conducted online only, with alcohol being sold for off-premises consumption.
During the discussion, councillors expressed support for the innovative business venture. Councillor Neil Richards noted that the business operates from home and is online, with no direct public interaction, making it a low-risk application. Councillor Tom Weatherston, while happy to approve, commented on the statutory licensed hours of 10 am to 10 pm, suggesting they might be restrictive for an online business with potential international customers, though he acknowledged this was beyond the board's current powers. Councillor Fay Sinclair welcomed the inclusion of malt whisky in gift hampers and wished Mr Darling well with his venture, particularly in anticipation of potential Christmas orders. Other councillors, including Councillor Jenny Linehan and Councillor Eric Small, also offered their support and best wishes.
The licence was granted, with the board wishing Mr Darling success in his new business.
