Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Islington and are not the council. About us
The Appointments and General Purposes Committee of Islington Council met on Friday 25 September 2026. The primary item scheduled for discussion was the shortlisting of candidates for the significant role of Director of Law and Governance. The committee was also scheduled to consider whether to exclude the press and public from discussions on certain agenda items due to the potential disclosure of exempt or confidential information.
Shortlisting for Director of Law and Governance
The committee was scheduled to consider the shortlisting of applicants for the post of Director of Law and Governance. This senior officer role is considered key to supporting the delivery of the council's missions and objectives, and the postholder would play a significant part in supporting, enabling, and monitoring the delivery of the Corporate Plan. The salary for this position was advertised within Grade CO2, ranging from £124,431 to £140,445 per annum, with an additional £12,534 per annum for undertaking the statutory Monitoring Officer role. The recruitment process was being conducted in accordance with the Council's Constitution, Part 4 Procedure Rules – Officer Employment Rules. The report indicated that the committee was asked to evaluate applications, detailed in an exempt appendix, to agree a shortlist for interview. Interviews were scheduled to take place in October, with any offer of employment subject to the Executive Notification Procedure. For appointments of this nature, the Officer Employment Procedure Rules stipulate that the Head of Democratic Services arranges for the committee's recommendation to be submitted to the next, or an additional, meeting of the Council for approval.
Exclusion of Press and Public
The committee was scheduled to consider whether to exclude the press and public from parts of the meeting. This consideration was based on the Access to Information Procedure rules within the Council's Constitution, and would be determined by whether any remaining agenda items were likely to involve the disclosure of exempt or confidential information.
