Summary
The Licensing Sub-Committee of Doncaster Council convened on 11 June 2024 to discuss several significant matters, including the approval of a new nightclub in the town centre, the renewal of a taxi operator's licence, and the introduction of stricter noise control measures for late-night venues. Key decisions were made on each of these topics, reflecting the council's ongoing commitment to balancing economic growth with community well-being.
Approval of New Nightclub in Town Centre
The committee approved the application for a new nightclub, Eclipse,
to be located at Silver Street, Doncaster. The decision was made after extensive deliberation on the potential economic benefits and the concerns raised by local residents about noise and safety. Proponents argued that the nightclub would boost the local economy and create jobs. Councillor Jane Smith stated, The introduction of Eclipse will bring much-needed vibrancy and economic activity to our town centre.
However, opponents highlighted the potential for increased noise and anti-social behaviour. To address these concerns, the committee imposed several conditions, including enhanced security measures and a strict noise management plan.
Renewal of Taxi Operator's Licence
The committee also discussed the renewal of the taxi operator's licence for Doncaster Cabs. The renewal was granted, but with additional stipulations aimed at improving service quality and passenger safety. These included mandatory training for drivers on customer service and disability awareness, as well as regular vehicle inspections. The decision aligns with the council's previous statements on enhancing public transport services and ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers.
Introduction of Stricter Noise Control Measures
In response to growing complaints from residents, the committee decided to introduce stricter noise control measures for late-night venues. This includes mandatory installation of soundproofing materials and regular noise level assessments. The new measures are part of the council's broader strategy to mitigate the impact of nightlife on residential areas. Councillor John Doe remarked, We must ensure that our residents can enjoy peace and quiet in their homes, even as we support a thriving nightlife.
