The panel confirmed the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer and discussed the introduction of a new urban greening initiative.
Appointment of New Chief Executive Officer
The panel confirmed the appointment of Dr. Sarah Thompson as the new Chief Executive Officer of the East Midlands Combined County Authority. Dr. Thompson, previously the Director of Environmental Services at Nottingham City Council, was praised for her extensive experience in public administration and environmental policy. Councillor John Smith stated, Dr. Thompson's proven track record in leading large-scale environmental projects makes her the ideal candidate to drive our authority forward.
Urban Greening Initiative
The panel discussed the introduction of a new urban greening initiative aimed at increasing green spaces within the East Midlands region. This initiative aligns with the council's previous manifesto pledge to enhance urban biodiversity and improve public health. The initiative will focus on converting underutilised urban areas into green spaces, including parks and community gardens. Councillor Jane Doe highlighted the benefits, saying, Urban greening not only improves air quality but also provides residents with much-needed recreational spaces.
Funding for Local Infrastructure Projects
The panel also reviewed funding allocations for several local infrastructure projects. These projects include the refurbishment of Derby City Centre and the development of new cycling paths in Chesterfield. The funding is part of the council's ongoing efforts to enhance local infrastructure and promote sustainable transportation options. Councillor Michael Brown noted, Investing in our infrastructure is crucial for the economic growth and sustainability of our region.
Public Consultation on Housing Development
A public consultation was announced regarding a proposed housing development in Matlock. The development aims to address the growing demand for affordable housing in the area. The panel emphasised the importance of community feedback in shaping the project. Councillor Emily White stated, We want to ensure that the voices of Matlock residents are heard and that the development meets the needs of our community.
