Summary

The South of the Borough Neighbourhood Committee met to discuss a range of local issues, including an update from the police, requests for funding from the Neighbourhood Community Grants programme, a proposal for a new zebra crossing, and an update on the work of the Neighbourhood Ranger Service.

The most significant item on the agenda was the consideration of four applications for funding from the Neighbourhood Community Grants (NCG) programme.

Neighbourhood Community Grants applications

NCGs are awarded to community groups for projects and activities that benefit residents in each of the four neighbourhoods in Kingston upon Thames. The Committee was asked to consider an application for a grant of £3,000 from Amber Bee CIC, for a project on mindfulness and internet safety for primary school children.

The focus of the project is to help children appreciate their community, their impact on others, to make good choices, create resilience, and increase their optimism for the future. The project will inspire discussion between children, their peers, teachers, parents/guardians, as well as the wider community, to promote the idea that mental health is just as important as physical health.

The Committee was also asked to consider an application for a grant of £3,000 from ADHD Embrace, a small charity working with families and children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The grant would support two specific activities, school visits and teacher seminars, designed to improve awareness of ADHD within the community.

Also requesting funding was Man & Boy, a local charity that supports families that have experienced relationship breakdown, who were requesting £3,000 to fund their Inclusive Activities programme. The programme includes a range of activities such as climbing, mentoring and craft activities for families with multiple barriers.

The final NCG application was from Sunray & Egmont Community Residents Association (SECra), a community organisation run for residents of the Sunray and Egmont estate in Chessington. SECra was seeking £3,000 to fund hall rental at the Sunray Community Centre to enable it to host its regular programme of community events, such as fitness classes, children's workshops and holiday events.

Clayton Road - Zebra Crossing Scheme

The Committee was also asked to consider a report on the results of a consultation on the implementation of a new zebra crossing on Clayton Road in Chessington. The report proposed a new zebra crossing located outside house number 120. The report pack included the results of a public consultation that was undertaken in September 2024, with 403 properties within the consultation area invited to share their views. Of the 61 responses received, the majority (75.41%) were in favour of the new crossing. The report included the following recommendation:

The Committee is asked to RESOLVE that:

  1. The result of the local consultation to be noted;
  2. The scheme as shown on Annex 1C to be approved for implementation.
