Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Northumberland and are not the council. About us
The Cramlington, Bedlington & Seaton Valley Community Partnership meeting scheduled for 26 May 2026 was planned to address a range of community-focused topics. These included a petition regarding traffic calming measures, appointments to outside bodies, and an informal discussion session with various local organisations.
Petition Regarding Speed Humps on Southfield Lea
A petition requesting the installation of speed humps on Southfield Lea in Cramlington was listed on the agenda for discussion. The petition cited concerns about vehicle speeds, particularly when children were playing in the area. The report pack indicated that Northumberland County Council, as the local highway authority, considers traffic calming measures only when there is clear evidence of a road safety problem, assessed through recorded vehicle speeds, collision history, and the road's function. The report noted that speed bumps are not a default response and each request is assessed individually against others across the county due to limited funding and competing safety priorities.
The report provided data indicating that average speeds on Southfield Lea were 17.4mph, based on GPS data from vehicles. It also stated that Northumbria Police accident data showed no personal injury collisions in the estate over the last five years, though this did not include near misses or damage-only incidents. Given this information, the report indicated there were no current plans to introduce traffic calming measures. However, it suggested that if specific streets or locations where speeding is a problem could be confirmed, officers would consider carrying out a speed survey.
Appointments to Outside Bodies
The meeting agenda included a review of appointments to various outside bodies. Members were asked to confirm if they wished to continue their roles on these organisations, which had been agreed by the Cramlington Bedlington & Seaton Valley Community Partnership in September 2025. The bodies listed for potential reappointment were:
- Astley Park Management Committee, with Councillor L Bowman listed as the current appointee.
- Beaconhill Community Association, which had a vacancy.
- Cramlington Community Association, with Councillor M Swinburn listed as the current appointee.
- East Hartford (and District) Community Association, with Councillor M Morris listed as the current appointee.
- New Hartley Community Association, with Councillor S Flower listed as the current appointee.
Informal Discussion Session
An informal discussion session was scheduled to take place with representatives from several organisations. These included:
- The Climate Change Team
- Northumberland Front Line Keeping Northumberland Safe
- The Local Plan Team
- Northumbria Police
- Paul Reynolds, representing the Renown Estate Agents Cramlington Leasehold Campaign.
This session was intended to provide an opportunity for open discussion on matters relevant to the community partnership's work.
The meeting agenda also outlined standard procedural items such as apologies for absence, the confirmation of notes from the previous meeting held on 24 March 2026, and public question time. The agenda also outlined procedures for declarations of interest and the reception of any new petitions or updates on previously received petitions.
The meeting status is PENDINGCOUNCILPUBLICATION, meaning that official minutes have not yet been published. The information presented is based solely on the documents provided for the meeting and does not reflect any discussions or decisions made during the meeting.
