Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Bexley and are not the council. About us
The Transport Users' Sub-Committee was scheduled to consider updates on Transport for London (TfL) services, including bus performance and the proposed Docklands Light Railway extension. The committee was also scheduled to discuss various rail issues, such as timetable changes and station improvements, as well as road-related matters including cycling infrastructure, electric vehicle charging, and highway maintenance.
Transport for London (TfL) Updates
The sub-committee was scheduled to receive updates on Transport for London (TfL) services. This included a review of bus service performance for the first quarter of 2026-27, with detailed reports on excess waiting times and departure punctuality for various routes operating within the borough. Specific attention was scheduled to be given to poorly performing bus routes, with a report expected to outline the reasons for these issues. The committee was also scheduled to be briefed on the TfL Corporate Environment Plan, which details actions to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the resilience of the transport network against climate risks. Furthermore, updates were anticipated on previous outstanding issues from the July meeting, including investigations into discrepancies between bus tracking apps and real-time displays, and performance improvement measures for specific routes. The consultation response regarding the proposed Docklands Light Railway (DLR) extension to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead was also scheduled to be noted.
Rail Issues
Several rail-related matters were scheduled for discussion. The sub-committee was to receive updates on outstanding actions from the previous meeting, including details on a bridge renewal programme, accessibility concerns at Belvedere station, and requests for extended access to station toilet facilities. Representatives from South Eastern Railway (SER) and Greater Thameslink Railway (GTR) were expected to provide general updates on issues affecting rail services in the borough. A significant item was the planned December 2026 timetable changes for South Eastern services, which were set to introduce increased service frequency on several lines, including the Greenwich, Bexleyheath, and Sidcup Lines, and reintroduce rounder services to Cannon Street. The report also included an update on the reopening of Charing Cross and Waterloo East stations following extensive track replacement works. Crime statistics for the Bexley borough, supplied by the British Transport Police (BTP), were also scheduled to be presented, along with an analysis of crime patterns and outcomes. Inspector Wayne Cullen from the BTP was noted as being available to attend a future meeting to discuss operations in Bexley.
Road Issues
A range of road-related matters were scheduled for consideration. The sub-committee was to receive an update on cycle network development, specifically the alignment for the Bexleyheath to Erith cycle route, with a recommendation to progress an alternative alignment via Arnsberg Way and Long Lane. Updates were also expected on residential cycle parking initiatives and cycle training programmes. The provision of electric vehicle (EV) charging points was a key topic, with details on the number of on-street and in-car park charging units installed, alongside borough-wide usage data. The report also outlined the Council's plans for further EV charge point provision, including bids for government funding. Highway maintenance and improvement schemes were to be discussed, with a list of roads included in the current year's resurfacing programme. The Council's road safety duties and recent accident data were to be presented, alongside information on proposed zebra crossing installations and the review of controlled parking zones in Abbey Wood and West Heath. Street works coordination, particularly concerning Thames Water's mains replacement projects in Northumberland Heath, Erith, and Sidcup, was also on the agenda. Finally, the sub-committee was scheduled to receive an update on the Council's winter maintenance operations, including gritting routes and stock levels.
