The Court of Aldermen met on Tuesday 13 October 2026. The meeting considered the minutes of the previous meeting, noted the re-election of Aldermen for two wards, and discussed proposed amendments to the charter and bylaws of the Westerfield Company of Educators.
Re-election of Aldermen
The Court noted the results of wardmotes held on 9 September 2026. In the ward of Bridge and Bridge Without, Tim Levene was re-elected as Alderman. Similarly, in the ward of Cordwainer, Alexander Robertson Martin Barr was re-elected as Alderman.
Admission to the Freedom of the City
The Court considered a motion to admit several individuals to the freedom of the City. A total of 199 people were presented by the Chamberlain for admission.
Westerfield Company of Educators Charter and Bylaws
Alderman Vincent Keaveny CBE presented two matters for formal approval, which had been considered and approved by the General Purposes Committee of Aldermen earlier that morning. The first concerned proposed amendments to the charter and bylaws of the Westerfield Company of Educators.
The primary proposed amendment to the company's 2018 charter relates to its charitable activities. The updated charter includes a reference to the Charitable Educators Trust, which has replaced the original fund. This change aims to broaden the scope of the company's philanthropic activities within the field of education and reduce the need for future charter assessments for related endeavours.
Several changes were also proposed for the company's bylaws. These include the revocation and replacement of existing bylaws that erroneously referred to ordinances. The revised bylaws aim to remove redundant references, provide greater parity, make the company's disciplinary process more explicit, and simplify membership categories. The category of assisted membership
is to be removed, and the status on repreeding will be covered. The bylaws will also be modernised, and the age at which a member can be admitted by patrimony has been reduced to 18. The company also believes that certain bylaws regarding attendance at court are overly prescriptive and should be decided by the court as appropriate. The terms of the treasurer are to be extended to allow for greater flexibility. The General Purposes Committee approved these amendments, and the Court subsequently considered them.
Exclusion of the Public
Following the discussion on the Westerfield Company of Educators, the Lady Mayor advised that a further matter considered by the General Purposes Committee would be discussed after the public had withdrawn. A motion to exclude the public from this part of the meeting was proposed, seconded, and carried.
