Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Newcastle upon Tyne and are not the council. About us
The City Council of Newcastle upon Tyne was scheduled to convene for a special meeting on Wednesday 4 November 2026. The primary item on the agenda was the consideration of conferring the title of Honorary Alderman upon five individuals in recognition of their service to the city as former councillors.
Honorary Aldermen Nominations
The council was scheduled to consider a motion to confer the title of Honorary Alderman of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne upon Dan Greenhough, Alexander Hay, Gareth Kane, Maureen Lowson, and Stephen Powers. This honour was to be bestowed in recognition of the eminent service they rendered to the City as a former Member of Newcastle City Council.

Following this consideration, if the motion was agreed, an event was scheduled to be arranged for the Lord Mayor to present the awards in the near future.

Honorary Aldermen are individuals who have given significant service to local government and are granted a ceremonial title by the council. This is distinct from being a serving councillor. The Local Government Act 1972 provides the framework for such appointments. ↩
