A special meeting of the County Council is scheduled to take place on Thursday 17 September 2026. The primary item on the agenda is the potential conferral of the Freedom of the County upon the Brigade of Gurkhas.
Freedom of the County - Brigade of Gurkhas
The County Council is scheduled to consider a proposal to grant the Freedom of the County to the Brigade of Gurkhas. This honour is an honorary distinction, as outlined in Section 249 of the Local Government Act 19721, and does not confer any special rights or privileges. The report pack indicates that the conferral would be in recognition of the Brigade of Gurkhas' long and distinguished record of service to the Crown and the United Kingdom
. The proposal requires the support of at least two-thirds of the Members voting at the meeting. The report pack states that the Freedom of the County is an honorary distinction and does not confer any special rights, privileges, allowances or payments.

Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972 allows local authorities to confer the title of honorary freeman on persons of distinction or those who have rendered eminent services to the local area. ↩
