December 10, 2025 View on council websiteSummary
Here is a summary of the items scheduled to be discussed at the Derbyshire County Council meeting on 10 December 2025. Councillors will consider nominations for the honorary title of Alderman or Alderwoman. The meeting will also include standard items such as prayers and declarations of interest.
Appointment of Honorary Alderman and Alderwoman
The council will consider a proposal to confer the title of Honorary Alderwoman upon former Councillor Jean Innes, and Honorary Alderman upon former Councillors David Allen, Barry Bingham, Barry Lewis, Ron Mihaly, Robert Parkinson and Simon Spencer.
The report pack states that on 8 October 2025, the Council agreed to confer the title of Honorary Alderman or Honorary Alderwoman on persons who have, in the opinion of the Council, rendered valuable service as past members.
To award the honorary title, the council must pass a resolution with a two-thirds majority of members present at the meeting.
If approved, the names of the appointed Aldermen and Alderwomen will be added to the Roll of Honorary Aldermen and Honorary Alderwomen held by the Monitoring Officer. They will also be presented with a badge of office to be worn at civic events.
The title comes with privileges, including:
- The courtesy title of Honorary Alderman or Honorary Alderwoman
- Receiving a copy of the summons to Council meetings
- Being invited to take part in civic events
- Being nominated to sit on outside bodies where a serving Elected Member is not required
- Being entitled to attend meetings of the Council
- Being allocated a seat in the Council Chamber
The report pack states that the reason for the recommendation is:
To formally recognise those individuals who have rendered eminent service as past members.
The relevant legislation is Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, which enables a principal council to confer the title of honorary aldermen or honorary alderwomen on persons who have in the opinion of the Council rendered eminent service as past members.
