The Warwickshire County Council convened to bestow the title of Honorary Freeman of the County upon Councillor Jerry Roodhouse in recognition of his decades of public service. Conferral of Honorary Freeman Title on Councillor Jerry Roodhouse

The council voted to confer the title of Honorary Freeman of the County of Warwickshire on Councillor Jerry Roodhouse, recognising his long and distinguished public service . Councillor George Finch, Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Children & Families, moved the recommendation, highlighting Councillor Roodhouse's integrity, commitment to public service, and ability to work across party lines. The proposal was seconded by Councillor Sarah Boad, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group.

Many councillors spoke in support of the motion, including former Councillor Izzy Seccombe, who described Councillor Roodhouse as a friend and valued his wisdom and friendship. She also made reference to the fact that Councillor Roodhouse had served on the council for a very long time:

Gerry was, you know, as I always said, around when Christ was born, really.

Councillor Jonathan Chilvers, Leader of the Green Group, praised Councillor Roodhouse's advice and his championing of early years services. Councillor Sarah Feeney, Leader of the Labour Group, acknowledged his support for new councillors and his effectiveness as a politician. Councillor Adrian Warwick, Leader of the Conservative Group, humorously noted Councillor Roodhouse's political effectiveness in Rugby, despite their party differences. Councillor George Cowcher recalled delivering leaflets with Councillor Roodhouse, highlighting his ability to work across political divides.

Councillor Jerry Roodhouse was unable to attend the meeting, but his acceptance speech was read by Councillor Sarah Boad. In it, Councillor Roodhouse expressed his gratitude for the honour, acknowledging the support of his family, friends, and colleagues. He reiterated his commitment to representing the people, fighting inequality, and supporting fairness.

The title of Honorary Freeman is bestowed under Section 249 (5) of the Local Government Act 1972¹, as amended, and recognises individuals who have rendered eminent service to the county. The Public Reports Pack stated that the honour carries no privilege and is purely an honour, reflecting the eminence of the person on whom it is conferred.
